Syracuse, NY--New York State Senate incumbents were victorious in Onondaga County this mid-term election.

But the poll results for the New York State Senate race were not what newcomers Republican Andrew Russo and Democrat Kathleen Joy had been hoping for.

Defeat for Russo

LeMoyne College music director Russo ran against Democrat incumbent David Valesky for a 2-year seat in the 49th district. Valesky has held the Senate seat since 2004 and beat Russo 57% to 42% of voters to win another term. Russo said from here Democrats and Republicans need to work together.

“Ultimately the people spoke,” said Russo. “Senator Valesky was chosen to move forward and I will be a supporter of his moving forward. We need to work together to get this state moving forward and we can’t do that by continuing to ramp up the animosity.”

Russo said he has not decided if he will run again in two years.

“I'm proud of the effort and I’m looking forward to staying involved in any capacity moving forward,” he said. “I’m open to anything. After a time investment like this its not something that’s at the front of my head for next year or the year after but that doesn’t mean I wont stay involved and help people who are out there doing this.”

Victory for DeFrancisco

Syracuse Common Council majority leader Joy was defeated by 18-year incumbent Republican senator John DeFrancisco for the two-year seat in the 50th District. DeFrancisco now faces his 10th term as state senator.

DeFrancisco plowed through Joy’s opposition with a 64% to 35% victory among voters. He said he believed it was his strong policy over the past 18 years, more than his campaign, that helped secure his victory.
