Teases
I teased two of the election stories, one local and on national. The first tease did not specifically apply to one story, but was broader saying, how the voting results will affect you? Then I teased the 25th congressional race, which still hadn’t declared a winner. Lastly, I teased a national story about the House of Representatives and Senate getting split between democrats and republicans.
25th Congressional District Race
To start the show we chose to go lead with the 25th Congressional District race that hadn’t declared a winner. The story was timely since the process of deciding if Dan Maffei or Ann Marie Buerkle was happening as we we’re writing the story. Also, the 25th Congressional District is in Syracuse, therefore the story is local.
Following the congressional race, we decided to do an anchor actuality on the 49th District State Senate race. The story kept good flow with the elections (like every story) and went from local to state politics. Democrat David Valesky edged out Andrew Russo in a closest election since 2004, making the story interesting.
Next, we brought the flow back to a more local story and did a reader on the Onondaga County Sheriff race. Sheriff Kevin Walsh was elected to his 5th four-year term. The victory makes Sheriff Walsh the longest-serving sheriff in the county’s history. The stories locality and also the longevity of Sheriff Walsh were notable for its place in our rundown.
This story was Kevin Belbey’s live wrap about the 120th District seat that Democrat Bill Magnarelli won. The 120th District includes part of Syracuse, therefore, the story has locality. The story also flows well with the Onondaga County Sheriff race. Kevin did a great job with the story on a day when the reporters struggled completing wraps.
In the previous story, Bill Magnarelli mentions working with newly elected Andrew Cuomo. Democrat Cuomo won the governor race in a landslide against Carl Paladino. The story flows well from local to a state story. Also the story has importance to New Yorkers, who are trying to turn our the economic recessions. In addition, it’s interesting since Cuomo’s father was also a governor, making the duo the fourth father-and-son governor pair.
I already mentioned that today reporters struggled finishing their wraps. With time running out, my rundown still needed one more wrap so I called the California State Director in a hail-marry attempt to get a story. However, I got the director and ended up with a wrap that I had to write fifteen minutes before the show. I could have used more time to write the story but sine I was on deadline, I quickly pieced together the story. The story had a good transition from a state to national story. Also, this was the first time marijuana made the ballot, which could have future repercussions on future elections.
Keeping the flow national, next we did the story on the republicans winning the House of Representatives. Ethan did an anchor actuality for story and used sound from ABCnewscall. We used the story because republicans had a successful election and won the House from the democrats for the first time in four years.
Lastly, we did a story on the democrats winning the Senate. I wanted to end the rundown with a reader in case we had to cut the story. In fact, we actually did have to cut the story because we ran out of time. The story flowed with the previous one about the House going republican. The democrats needed to win the Senate so Obama’s legislative agenda could receive support.
Our kicker story was about the San Francisco Giants having a parade after winning the World Series. The story was light-hearted and exciting for a city that hadn’t won the title in almost 60 years.
Weather
I made sure to use extra weather in case Ethan needed to fill time. However, Ethan only used half of the content and finished the show perfectly on time. Overall, I was satisfied with our performance and thought the show ran smoothly.
