Marcellus, N.Y. - The state Governor's race finished with the biggest margin of the House, the Senate and itself and locally, persons have varying reasons for why they voted Republican. The Senate race ended 51- 46 in favor of the Democrats, the House 184-240 in favor of the Republicans and the Governor, a lopsided 15-28 in favor of the Republicans.
Late last night, the gym of Marcellus High School was packed with voters waiting in line to cast their ballots. Many spoke of their desire to vote Republican because they felt the Republican party would lead them in the best position for the future. Others are optimistic that positive results will come of the elections.
MaryEllen Drabst of Marcellus sees getting a stable job for her and others in the community as her main reason for voting. "Jobs. In this country people have got to be put back to work," Drabst said. "I mean we've had people that have had good jobs and just lost them."
Christopher Cushan, a former American soldier from Marcellus, realizes that his livelihood depends on who is in office. "I care about who's in office, it's going to drive my career I guess, anchor my career really," Cushan said. "A lot of those people make a lot of decisions."
The population voting at Marcellus High School this past evening feels optimistic about the newcomer and only wants the best situation for the local community and future generations.
Ultimately, sound decisions drive voting and make or break candidates. These decisions allow for progression, but sometimes lead to demise. Now as the Republican party gains the upper hand in the Senate and the House the true work for the community and its newcomer lies ahead.
