SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Kevin Walsh has already served 16 years as Onondaga County’s sheriff, and with his win in yesterday’s election, he will become the county’s longest-serving sheriff.

According to the Post-Standard, Walsh has been in law enforcement for a total of 47 years and has been the sheriff for the last 16 years. In January 2012, Walsh will begin his 18th year as sheriff and will surpass John Dillon, who previously held the record.

A Decisive Victory

Walsh received 63.2 percent of the vote last night, beating out Democratic candidate Joe Price and Working Families candidate Toby Shelley, both deputies of Walsh. Price received 25.4 percent of the vote, while Shelley garnered 9.6 percent.

This is the highest margin of victory, in both percentage points and total votes, for any of Walsh’s previous sheriff races.

Walsh’s decisive win may have been due to negative press surrounding Price. The Post-Standard reported that Price posted numerous racist, sexist, and anti-gay comments on an Internet forum last year. However, Price denies posting all but three of the comments.

The Next Step

Walsh thanked his 650 employees for all of their hard work in a speech at the Republican Party Headquarters last night.

Walsh does not know if he will seek a sixth term. He said that he will base his decision on what happens in the next four years.
