Centro Will Reduce Bus Routes in 2011

Some Centro routes will be reduced due to lack of funding, as of January 17, 2011.

The CNY Regional Transportation Authority has received reduced funding from the state of New York for three years, but has been able to dance around the problem. Finally, the money shortage has caused Centro to make cuts to some of its routes.

Centro Marketing Director Steve Koegel says the company is trying to prevent too many people from being affected.

"We've done what we could to identify routes or parts of routes where the ridership is extremely low or locations where customers have reasonable alternatives on different Centro routes," he said. "So we're trying to minimize the impact."

Here's some of the routes that will be affected:
- 88x / Cicero North Syracuse Express
- 78 Fairmount / West Genesee
- Route 138 Auburn - Taunton and Route 236 Auburn - Camillus
- 38 Auburn - Elbridge/238 Auburn - Port Byron

If the state of New York changes its mind and decides to provide more funding, reductions may not be necessary. Koegel hopes that the state will reconsider, but he is not optimistic.

"We do not know what the state has planned," he said. "We do know if you listen to the Governor-elect Cuomo's campaign speeches, it seems as if he's going to cut more rather than increase spending."
