Close call for 25th Congressional District seat

By: Rochelle Scott (NCC News)

Republican challenger, Ann Marie Buerkle, trailed closely behind Rep. Dan Maffei for the 25th Congressional District seat. Initially the results counted from Wayne County claimed Maffei the victor with 3000 voting difference. Now, Buerkle leads by less than 1,000 votes with roughly 6,000 absentee ballots remaining to be counted. Election officials in all four counties expect most of the absentee ballots to arrive by the end of the week.

A majority of the ballots not received are from Onondaga County, where preliminary results show Maffei leading with 54 percent of the vote.

Onondaga County, which makes up the largest portion of the district, is the only county that Maffei has a lead in. But he lost or trailed in the western part of the district in northern Cayuga County, all of Wayne County and three towns in Monroe County.

Chapple Family Professor of Citizenship and Democracy Dr. Robert McClure feels that the incumbent, Maffei, has a better chance at winning this election.

“Had the republicans nominated a more visible and experienced candidate with more recognition, they will probably win.” McClure.

If Buerkle is elected she promises to:

  • Help get the economy back on track.
  • Cut taxes,
  • Control spending
  • Reduce uncertainty about government tax and regulatory policies.
  • Extend the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts and advocates eliminating the estate tax,

If Maffei is elected, he promises to/ believes in:

  • Bigger government
  • Socializing entire industries
  • Eliminate tax breaks for companies that move overseas
  • To seek a more balanced trade policy in a second term

Buerkle insisted that motivated Republicans, conservatives and Tea Party activists would make it a close race in the end. If she wins, it will be a great help for Republicans in the House
