October 13,
My news team consisted of myself as producer and Kevin Belby as anchor. We worked really well as a two man (well one woman and man) band to make this work.
For the headlines, I tried to incorporate the most popular and controversial national stories with an added local story.
The national story more to start off with was the 17 year old "don't ask, don't tell" policy. This also flowed right into New York Republican gubernational candidate Carl Paladino's latest controversy regarding the gay community. Then with the local story on the voting of the 2011 operating budget for the Northern Onondagan Public Library.
Stories
Chilean Miners
The Chilean rescued miners from San Diego, seemed to be the best story to start with. Information gathered was made into an anchor actuality produced by Kevin Belby through ABC Newscall. The story was being updated as we did the rundown and was a topic of great interest. Fifteen miners were finally rescued after being trapped from August 5th, a total of 69 days. There are still some missing but mining expert, Ellen Smith has confidence in the technology being used to help find the others.
Don't ask don't tell
This policy seemed to be another story of not just local but national and international interest.
The ban was ordered by a federal judge to be lifted. President Obama agrees to a newly stated study of troops, their families and how they feel the ruling should be, all pending the review of the Defense Department. This story was made into a reader as this story is still in the making with not much finalized.
Plan B
Students at Dr. Weeks Elementary School in Syracuse were enrolled into a new expansion plan called Plan B. Here the 1600 students were to be moved into vacant classrooms within the Greater Syracuse School District. This seemed to be a nice seg-way into a local story because of the similarities in policy implementations. It worked well as a live wrap and provided a great transition and overall flow for the rundown
Carl Paladino
This reader brought us back on a state-wide wave-length, on gay rights and beliefs. New York Republican gubernatorial candidate, Carl Paladino has been under bad press regarding his "badly chosen words" regarding the gay community. He was later found out to be a renter for gay clubs, a few days after his public apology for his homophobic remarks.
Hate Crimes
Another reader incorporated into the rundown was one that flowed on the same idea of gay rights and abuse. A suspected gang member, Ruddy Vargas- Perez, was arrainged Tuesday for hate crimes meted onto a 30 year old gay man. This brought rise to the overwhelming homophobic bullying that has been occurring within the Bronx and surrounding areas.
Crime Victims Walk
This story also flowed from the theme of equality and rights. A walk for abuse victims begins at 4 pm outside Crouse Hospital Emergency Room. It worked well as a reader because this was a developing story with not sufficient information for a wrap or actuality.
Budget
Keeping in step with local stories, Lauren Fabrizzi did a recorded wrap on the Onondagan Legislature's approval of a 1.15 billion dollar budget. This will drastically reduce county's property tax for the next year. It kept in sync with the flow and provided a good transition into our tease
Library Budget
This story was kicked as there was no time to do it
Tease
The tease provided a nice introduction for the kicker. It was light-hearted and a good change in pace from previous stories.
BREAK
Video Games
Eight friends played in a three day video game marathon to raise money for charity. This aided in the donation of toys to children in hospitals all across the country. This will be broadcast live via the web. This was light hearted and something for a worthy cause.
Weather
We had little time but we made our weather into the lineup of today, tonight, tomorrow and current weather.
