$11.5 Million Funding Plan for Jamesville DeWitt School District Approved Without Raising Taxes

DEWITT, NY-- Jamesville-DeWitt residents approved an $11.5 million funding plan at the district's meeting Tuesday night. Voters approved the plan by an 86-percent margin, with a 476 to 74 vote.
The funding plan will not raise residents taxes, but will take $500,000 from the Jamesville-DeWitt reserve budget, and will borrow the remaining money from state aid. Jamesville-DeWitt School Board President Virginia Murphy says that not raising taxes was the key to the plan.

"We're trying to deal with things in a very cost effective manner and the fact that we were able to do so...so there's no impact to taxpayers was significant to them"

The majority of the funds will go to fixing the broken and leaking roofs of several district buildings.Over $9 million will be used to rennovate the roofs at the high school, middle school, and three elementary schools.

The plan also calls for:

• A safety fence to be added to the high school baseball field
• The repavement of the  tennis courts at the middle school and  Moses-DeWitt Elementary School
• Repaving school parking lots
• New bleachers at the high school
• Repaving the bus loop at Jamesville Elementary

Murphy says that the school district is fortunate to have residents who wanted the plan.

"Jamesville-DeWitt has been really blessed with loyal taxpayers. I think the families value what their children receive here and they seem to go out of their way to show approval".
