The capital project aims to install new roofs, replace high school bleachers, and re-surface middle school tennis courts, among other renovations, Virginia Murphy, the Jamesville-DeWitt School Board President, said.
The district will use $500,000 from its capital reserve fund for the renovations and borrow the rest from state aid, Murphy said. The residents are delighted that the project will not raise their taxes.
"They're just pleased that we are trying to deal with things in a cost effective manner," Murphy said. "So there's no impact to tax payers."
Approximately $9.4 million will go to restoring the roofs at the district's high school, middle school, and three elementary schools, Murphy said.
Other renovations include:
- reconstructing a portion of the Jamesville-DeWitt High School student parking lot and bus loop
- replacing the sky light in the high school media room
- installing safety fencing at Lyndon Fields
- resurfacing tennis courts at the Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School and Moses-DeWitt Elementary
An overwhelming 467 residents voted in favor of the project, while only 74 voted against it, Murphy said. Many of the district's residents are happy with what the plan has to offer.
"Jamesville-Dewitt has been really blessed with loyal tax payers," Murphy said. "I think the families value what their children receive here, and they seem to go out of their way to show approval."
