SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Fabius Christian Church on Route 80 is undergoing a $50,000 restoration project.

The church was formed in 2007 when the Fabius Baptist Church and the Fabius United Methodist Church joined together in an effort to salvage membership. The former Baptist church, which was built in 1818, serves as the location of the new church.

Renovations long overdue

The project includes replacing old wooden siding with a newer material that is expected to last about 50 years. The church is also receiving insulation and new doors.

Morgan Hill Construction was contracted for the project. Todd Warner, manager of the Fabius-based company, believes the renovations were a long time coming.

"It was getting to the point where it was almost an eyesore because the paint was in such bad shape on it," Warner said. "Neighbors across the street had said how much they appreciate the fact that it's being fixed."

Congregation grows

Rev. Cindy Mapstone, the pastor of the Fabius Christian Church, explains that the renovations were not made with the intention of boosting membership, which has happened nonetheless.

"There have been people coming in and seeing what things are about, and it's kind of been a by-product of that," Mapstone said. "But that definitely hasn't been the main reason behind it."

Warner, also a member of the church, is hopeful that the project will be completed by the end of the month.
