SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Superintendent Daniel Lowengard told parents at Dr. Weeks Elementary School yesterday that his plan to relocate students during a 28-million dollar renovation is not a done deal.

Parents expressed their concerns about the plan, which proposes to split the school into three other buildings. Lowengard says the district cannot find a building big enough to hold all 800 or so Weeks students.

Some of the parents concerns are:
  • Their children traveling to East Syracuse
  • Siblings being split up
  • Their children attending school with older, middle school students
  • Moving the children during the school year

Director of Communications Mike Henesey says that the district needs to gain four months' construction time for the plan to work.

"The idea is not to delay the construction project any longer," Henesey said.

The Superintendent and the school board feel that if the construction project can't begin in May, then, the relocation plan may not take place.

The school district's original plan to lease space in the former Syracuse Developmental Center failed. Lowengard says the school is long overdue for renovation.
